A two-day English programme, Choral Speaking Competition 2015,  which aims to improve students’ speech in terms of pitch, tone, volume, rate, diction and enunciation as well as promoting team spirit among Semester three students in PIS, was organized by English Language Unit, General Studies Department on 6 and 7 October 2015.

A total of one hundred and fifty-eight (158) PIS students have benefitted from the programme. The participants were one hundred and forty-eight (148) Semester 3 students from the four (4) different departments of PIS, namely, JKE (49 students), JKM (48 students), JPH (26 students) and JRKV (25 students). Meanwhile, eight (8) facilitators chosen from English Language Society were entrusted with the responsibilities to help out during the programme and two (2) Semester one students were trained by the lecturer-in-charge to be the Masters of Ceremony for the Final Round cum Prize-Giving Ceremony for the said programme.

Eight (8) participating teams, led by their respective lecturers are listed as follows: DEV3B (Pn. Ainun Juhariah Bt Hussin), DHK3A (Cik Nurul Hana bt Ab Nasir), DEM3A (Pn. Catherine Nguoi Chui Lam), DRG3A (Pn. Siti Noraini Hamzah), DKM3A (Pn. Kamarul Aina bt Mohamad), DKM 3 (En. Yeow Chee Kheong), DEE3B (En. Mohd Rafiq b. Mujilan) and DEP3A (Siti Faezah bt Ahmad Sazali).

Among the objectives of this programme were to develop students’ effective use of voice variation in their interpretation of chosen texts enhanced by their imagination and creativity and cultivate the effective team work among the students. Each team was led by a conductor chosen amongst the students and a time limit of 6-7 minutes was allocated for the stage performance.

For the preliminary round, Cik Nora bt Sahari (JPA) and Pn. Noor Azeelia bt Abd Manan (JPA) were appointed as the judges. Meanwhile, En. Jahabar Jainul Abideen Bin Shahul Hameed (JPA) and Pn. Zuraidah Bt Mohd Ramly (JMSK) were appointed as the judges for the Final Round.  The competition results are as follows: First Place (DEV3B), Second Place (DKM3A), Third Place (DEP3A) and Consolation Prize (DEM3A). Meanwhile, the participating team from DKM3A was nominated as THE MOST PRESENTABLE GROUP while DEM3A had successfully impressed the crowd by grabbing both THE BEST CONDUCTOR AWARD and THE BEST SCRIPT AWARD.

On the whole, Choral Speaking Competition 2015 has provided the participants with the opportunities to vocalize their ideas in front of others and speak in public confidently. This programme can thus be considered an essential platform towards developing the students’ sensitivity to effective use of language.
