(The Programme Manager)

A test run of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform: Effective Oral Presentation Skills, was conducted by Language Unit of General Studies Department (JPA) in June session 2016, as per requirement of MOOC Master Competition organized by Instructional and Digital Learning Division – Center for eLearning and Teaching (CeLT), Department of Polytechnic Education.

This programme: MOOC - Online Learning Competition 2016 was thus carried out with the main aim to boost the motivation of students to engage in and submit work of compelling quality to the platform towards successful implementation of the test run. The said programme has run for a time frame of about five (5) weeks (4 September – 13 October 2016), including the grace period. Four (4) English Language lecturers, namely, Catherine Nguoi Chui Lam, Noor Azeelia Bt Abdul Manan, Pooganeswari Siteram Pillai and Nora Bt Sahari were entrusted with the roles as the MOOC Tutors for the said platform.

The benefits of this programme are two-fold. Firstly, this programme can help our students to develop their ideas and do the necessary preparation for their oral presentation as this online course was developed by taking into account the essential subskills needed for students to accomplish their oral presentation assessment. Secondly, constructive feedback given by Course Tutors as well as the peers’ comments can scaffold the students’ learning as they were engaged in an interactive and supportive online learning environment.

A total of two-hundred and thirty five (235) Semester One students taking DUE1012 Communicative English Course this semester have enrolled and participated in the online course. The classes involved are listed as follows:  DJK 1A, DMB 1B, DKM 1B, DEV 1A, DKM 1A, DEV 1B and DEM 1B. Besides, this programme can also nurture discovery and independent learning as it can scaffold learner autonomy in the learning process. Learners are generally assisted to become more autonomous in the virtual classroom. Most importantly, through this programme, students were also led to see as how they can support each other in an online community, in line with our efforts to create a supportive language learning environment that can facilitate the students’ learning!
