A test run of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform: Effective Oral Presentation Skills, was conducted by Language Unit of General Studies Department (JPA) in June session 2016, as per requirement of MOOC Master Competition organized by Instructional and Digital Learning Division – Center for eLearning and Teaching (CeLT), Department of Polytechnic Education.

This programme: MOOC - Online Learning Competition 2016 was thus carried out with the main aim to boost the motivation of students to engage in and submit work of compelling quality to the platform towards successful implementation of the test run. The said programme has run for a time frame of about five (5) weeks (4 September – 13 October 2016), including the grace period. Four (4) English Language lecturers, namely, Catherine Nguoi Chui Lam, Noor Azeelia Bt Abdul Manan, Pooganeswari Siteram Pillai and Nora Bt Sahari were entrusted with the roles as the MOOC Tutors for the said platform.
 
The benefits of this programme are two-fold. Firstly, this programme can help our students to develop their ideas and do the necessary preparation for their oral presentation as this online course was developed by taking into account the essential subskills needed for students to accomplish their oral presentation assessment. Secondly, constructive feedback given by Course Tutors as well as the peers’ comments can scaffold the students’ learning as they were engaged in an interactive and supportive online learning environment.
 
A total of two-hundred and thirty five (235) Semester One students taking DUE1012 Communicative English Course this semester have enrolled and participated in the online course. The classes involved are listed as follows:  DJK 1A, DMB 1B, DKM 1B, DEV 1A, DKM 1A, DEV 1B and DEM 1B. Fourteen (14) students who were chosen to receive The Best Participation Awards are listed as follows: Chong You Quan (DJK1A), Muhd Zulhelmie B Samsudin (DJK1A), Kishore Kumar (DMB 1B), Siti Nurul’Ain Yahaya (DMB1B), Shahrizal B Saidin (DKM 1B), Muhamad Fuad Shaharuddin (DKM 1B), Nurin Jaslina BT Mohd Rozi (DEV1A), Muhammad Al Hussin B. Rahim (DEV 1A), Muhd Syah Iskandar B Othman (DKM 1A), Nurwahidah BT Saadion (DKM 1A), Fatin Nuraqilla BT Anuar (DEV 1B), Puteri Nur Yasmin BT Ya’ccob (DEV1B),  Viknashalan A/L Siva Kumar (DEM 1B) and Stephen Fernandez A/L Selvamany (DEM 1B).


On the whole, this programme can be considered an essential platform towards enriching the students’ learning experience through computer-mediated communication and interactive activities conducted online. Besides, this programme can also nurture discovery and independent learning as it can scaffold learner autonomy in the learning process. Learners are generally assisted to become more autonomous in the virtual classroom. Most importantly, through this programme, students were also led to see as how they can support each other in an online community, in line with our efforts to create a supportive language learning environment that can facilitate the students’ learning!

English Carnival

English Carnival 2016 was organized by English Unit, General Students Department (JPA) with the main aims to promote communicative competence among Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan (PIS) students. It was 3-day programme held at CdeC lobby on 10 to 12 October 2016.

Total estimated number of 618 PIS students have benefitted from the programme. The participants were from every department. Meanwhile, a total of thirty (30) students were entrusted with the responsibilities to be the facilitators for this programme.

A total of five activities, namely, ’10 station games’,Spelling Bee”, “The Singing Nightingales”, “Magic Hands” and “We are the Builders” were carefully selected, prepared and conducted according to time slot given. For Station games, they were carried out simultaneously for 3days and open to all PIS people.  On 10 Oct, Spelling Bee was conducted at 10 to 12pm and the total number of participants was 24 students. Following was ‘The singing Nightingales’ started at 2.30 pm and ended at 4.30 pm. Only 5 of them go to final round out of 14 participants.
The following day was start with Magic hands where the 6 groups participated were gave time to draw and color an English quote on a piece of white clothes and presented in front of judges. On the evening, ‘We are the Builders’ took place with massive number of participations around 50 students. A report from every activity was attached with this report.

Closing ceremony took place on 12th October and began by 9.00 with final round ‘Spelling Bee’. After that, continued with final round ‘The Singing Nightingales’ which brought final 5 contestants to show their undeniable talents. Closing speech was given by Mr. Jahabar as EEP coordinator and the ceremony has come to the peak of event which is prize giving ceremony.

On the whole, English Carnival 2016 has created a fun, interesting and meaningful language learning experience for all the participants. Thus, it can be considered an essential platform towards developing the students’ interest in learning the language.

The Spelling Bee Competition was held in conjunction with English Carnival 2016. 26 volunteered participants were involved in the Preliminary Round. During the Preliminary Round of the competition, participants were first briefed about the rules and regulations before the competition commenced at 10:00am. Preliminary Round was conducted using Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary audio software and students were then asked to spell the words by writing their answers on the sheet provided. Participants spelt the words based on the pronunciation they listened through the headphones that were directly connected to the laptops. Facilitators were stationed at each assigned Spelling Bee stations and participants proceeded to their stations to complete the tasks.
FIVE (5) finalists were selected from the Preliminary Round and the Final Round was executed using the conventional means; the spellers spelt aloud the words read by the pronouncer.  Mohammad Dzahir Bin Salim from Department of Tourism and Hospitality was announced as a winner of English Carnival 2016 Spelling Bee Competition.

The Singing nightingales activity was carried out for two days which are on the 10th of October and 12th of October 2016. The participants were required to register latest on the 5th of October 2016. Upon registration the students were required to submit their minus 1 and lyrics to avoid sensitive and inappropriate content. 13 students registered: However on the day of the competition only 11 students participated. The five finalists were chosen by the two judges: Mr. Razak Salim and Mr. Yeow Chee Keong. The final five students performed with a new selection of songs on the 12th of October and the esteemed judges were Mr Rowland and Mr Mohd Fadzli bin Zulkeflee. The following is the list of finalist according to their final placing.

There were 10 groups participated in this competition. I had a short meeting with the representative of each group a week before the event. They were briefed on the information, rules and regulations of the competition. They were asked to draw lot on the buildings that they have to construct during the competition. Each group was given RM20 for their expenses.
During the competition each group was given 3 feet X 3 feet plywood as a base for their building. WE ARE THE BUILDERS competition started exactly at 2.30 at CDEC’s hall. Participants used minimum 3 recycle items to construct the buildings. Judges for the competition, Pn Kavitha and Pn Poogan arrived at 3pm and started to evaluate the groups. Each group will be evaluated based on the creativity & use of recycle items, interactive skills, time management and language. Participants able to use English as mode of conversation during the competition. Each group given a chance to present about the building to the judges and audience. The competition ended at 4.45 pm after the 5 finalist teams were announced.  Prize giving ceremony was conducted on the next day during the English Carnival’s closing ceremony. Placing for the competition also  were announced on the closing ceremony.

Magic hand is a mock mural painting activity which objectively to discover new arts talent in students and develop better painting skills besides ascertain student’s communication level and skills pertaining English.  Through this activity, students were able to enhance communication skills during group discussion in order to come out with a great artwork. Each drawing need to be included English phrases such idioms and motivational quotes.
Thirty students were involved and divided into a group of five members. They were given 3 hours to complete their task. After completed the mural painting task, a representative from the group need to explain about their artwork detailing and answer questions thrown by the judges who were Pn Farahdiba Md Said from JPA and Pn Fa’izah Hamzah from CISEC.
Cash prizes had been given to the winners and the best mock mural had been displayed for the whole week of the program at CDeC. It is a great activity which enable students across department to show their hidden talent and developing better communication skills through the presentation and group discussion and of course their English.
More and more fun and entertaining activities to be carried out by JPA and supported by other department after this. Don’t freak out, just speak up. Congratulation!!!
