‘CHALLENGE
WITH NEWSPAPERS’ programme
was carried out in two schools, namely Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Seri
Alam (Satellite School) and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kota Masai 2
simultaneously on 24 October 2012. This programme incorporated students’
assessments, with the creation of original fun learning activities with
community service. Twenty-five semester three students who were the
facilitators, carried out the programme for about a hundred students in each
school. The New Straits Times Press (KL) provided the newspapers to be used for
the programme.
The
objectives of this programme were to provide a platform to raise the
participants’ confidence level and to instill the neighbourhood spirit and
bridge the gap between polytechnic and the community in Pasir Gudang.In SMK
Bandar Seri Alam, Ms. Parahsakthi Chidambaram gave a speech on behalf of the
Language Unit, followed by the Principal Tn. Hj. Yahaya b. Suip and Pn. Hjh.
Fatimah bt. Ahmad, Pasir Gudang District Education Officer who declared the event open.
In SMK Kota Masai 2, Ms. Yang Wan Ling
gave a speech followed by the Deputy Administrative Officer Pn. Norhayati Abd.
Kadir who declared the event open.
The facilitators expanded
their knowledge and gained experience while carrying out the activities well.
The participants were active and enjoyed themselves. They found the activities
fun and interesting. The winners were delighted to receive hampers (which were
provided by the schools) as prizes and souvenirs were provided by the Language
Unit, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.
Overall,
the programme “Challenge With newswpapers” was a success and it is hoped that
the PIS students will find English fun and improve their English language
skills and develop leadership skills too, as it will help them and the
community in future.
