With the aims to promote communicative competence and enhance language learning motivation among PIS students, “Games4Brain Competition 2015”, which is an English programme organized by English Language Unit, General Studies Department was held on 8 July 2015, at DSB, Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan.

A total of 52 PIS students have benefited from the programme. The participants were sixteen (16) Semester 1 students, sixteen (16) Semester 3 students and eight (8) Semester 5 students. Meanwhile, sixteen (16) facilitators chosen from English Language Society were entrusted with the responsibilities to conduct the language games. By giving instructions on how to play the games and interacting with participants throughout the whole session in the target language, as per required by some of the games, this programme is indeed an essential platform for facilitators to improve their communication skills in English.

A total of 10 language games, namely, “Spot the odd one”,  “Word morph”,  “Catch phrase”,  “Tongue twister”,  “This is how we roll”,  “Acrotics”,  “Anagram”,  “Word search”,  “It's t-time” and “Boggle”  were carefully chosen by the English language lecturers involved and conducted concurrently at ten (10) different booths which have been set up earlier in multi-purpose hall (DSB). Each group, which consists of 4 students, was given a score card with which the facilitators-in-charge will record the total points that they have earned from each language game. Participants were only allowed to attend to each language game for ten (10) minutes only. Each group can earn up to 10 points from each language game and the groups with the highest points earned from all ten (10) games will be the winners.

These language games managed to get the participants to practice the four main language skills, i.e speaking, reading, writing and listening in a stress-free environment. Besides enabling the participants to think creatively, the language games also helped to develop and promote creative problem-solving skills as the participants were required to solve as many language problems as possible within the given duration.

Most importantly, through this programme, both parties involved, i.e the participants and facilitators were led to see how teamwork and leadership can complement each other and be synergized for optimal performance towards successful outcomes in a competitive environment.
