Interdepartmental British Parliamentary Debate and British Parliamentary Debate Workshop 2013

On the 11 March until 12 March 2013, General Studies Department’s language unit and the Drama, Debat and Pidato club organised an interdepartmental British Parliamentary debate 2013 to promote and encourage creative and critical thinking among students in Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan through debating in the English Language.

The event took place with the participations of 24 students representing all the four main departments. The tournament consists of 4 preliminary rounds, semi-final and a final round. In the final round, two teams from JRKV and two teams from JKE went all out to win the title of best debater and champions of the debate.

The teams were ranked based on a power matching system and in the semi-finals; it was a sudden death round where the best two teams from two different venues qualified for the final round.  Debaters from JRKV: Awgku Luqman Nul Hashim and Nicholas Ong went home as the winning team and the best speaker was from JKE: Manikandan A/L Thaneer Malayan.  The title of the debate is THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT THE MEDIA SHOULD NOT REPORT ON A TERRORIST ATTACK IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE EVENT. The closing ceremony was officiated by Tuan Haji Azizi bin Lin, Director of Politeknik Ibrahim Sultan and graced by the representatives from each department.

In accordance with the debate competition, a workshop was conducted on the 10th of March 2013, Sunday, and 24 students turned up for the event. The students participated in mock debates and were exposed to the basic knowledge on how to debate and the rules in a debate.
